Water and Fire Garden

Central Goldfield Art Gallery, Maryborough

2025(Public Space Design, Garden,

Indigenous Placemaking)

This is a public space project in Dja Dja Wurrung Country, under the support &#38;amp;
management of Djandak. I worked (under 3Acres Landscape Architecture) on the fabrication of three design
features in this indigenous garden: central plaque, bench, and drainage grate. The processes
include tracing and organising the artworks into digital line works for
laser cut fabrication. Lines and
areas are distinguished for cutting and etching.

		<description>LEAF Garden

Linden New Art, St. Kilda, Bunurong Boon Wurrung Country

2025(Public Space Design, Garden, Zine Making)

Retrofitting the back garden — now named LEAF Garden — I facilitated the design, construction, planting, and presentation of the project. The project was realised collaboratively by community members and volunteers, with minimal involvement from professional designers or contractors. It shows what can be achieved through collective care and creativity.

	&#60;img width="3509" height="2480" width_o="3509" height_o="2480" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/6836158a5499382c6f98139f2e83a16e73209a688387b91c8333bd386a9371f7/Linden-Landscape-Plan-final_page-0001.jpg" data-mid="239309872" border="0" data-scale="61" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/6836158a5499382c6f98139f2e83a16e73209a688387b91c8333bd386a9371f7/Linden-Landscape-Plan-final_page-0001.jpg" /&#62;

Drawing on the natural landscape of Country, the design acknowledges the enduring custodianship of the Boonwurrung/Bunurong people and carries forward their stories. The main planted beds echo a dry riverbed at a confluence; the place where two streams meet and flow together. Native trees, plants, and grasses create a living classroom, showcasing Indigenous plants and their cultural and ecological significance.

The garden has also been shaped by the ideas of Linden’s Kids Consultative Committee, giving voice to our youngest community members. Their vision has brought to life Little Linden curated by children, a rolling mural program, and future workshops that will keep the space vibrant and evolving.
The LEAF Garden is a place to learn, play, rest and grow. It is a space for gathering, conversation, and celebration - a contemporary meeting place continuing the traditions of this land.

I also created a zine for the garden’s opening. It’s an A4 double-sided sheet that folds into a zine while unfolding as a landscape plan.

<description>Celebrating Everyday2022(Public Open Space, Sustainable Urbanism,

Community Design)

Celebrating Everyday explores the possibilities of a
community centre, Hardy-Gallagher Linear Reserve in Princes Hill of Victoria,
by responding to the six leaves of sustainability. The Everyday Garden and
Checkerboard Plaza focus on community participation: they are places for public
gatherings to care and share: gardening, nature classes, playing, farmer
market, and more. The design proposes vibrant formal qualities and flexible
multifunctionality that welcome all and celebrate everyday activities.

Untangling the Asian Community Gardens

2022(research, landscape theory, community design, design activism, culture and society)

The thesis project seeks to understand the motivations of the founders/designers of three professional-led urban community
gardens in China, Singapore, and Malaysia. These motivations are embedded in the social and political
context of Asia. The comparison will interrogate the wider roles of community gardens in the Asian context.
Unlike in North America and Europe, community gardens only existed about a decade ago in the Asian
context. However, the unique qualities of Asian community gardens are not yet thoroughly captured
in academic research. There is still a limited understanding of the driving forces that have led to their
establishment in the Asian context. While there are some global similarities in community gardens, Asia offers
unique projects that challenge the general ontology and epistemology of community gardens.
The project aims to advance the understanding of the Asian community garden by comparing the three
cases and documenting the processes and stories behind these phenomenon.

Knowledge &#38;amp; Innovation Community Garden
(KICG) is a community in Yangpu District,
Shanghai. It opened to the public in 2016
with funding from a private enterprise and is
operated by the not-for-profit organisation
Clover Nature School (CNS). The 2200 m2
open space is incorporated into ‘Green Axis’,
a connected green corridor renewal project
by the government (Liu, 2020; Liu et al., 2022).
KICG connects an old neighbourhood built in
the 1980s and a newly developed apartment
community (Liao, 2020). Community building
and placemaking activities are regularly held
in the space and CNS wishes to use KICG as
a prototype to promote community gardens
in Shanghai (Liu et al., 2022). Taking KICG as a
starting point, Clover Nature School now has
built more than 200 community gardens and
900 micro gardens in Shanghai. Their community
gardens are documented by Shanghai Manual,
a guidebook by United Nations and International
Exhibitions Bureau that is published annually
on urban development issues in developing
countries (Liu et al., 2022).

Kebun-Kebun Bangsar (KKB) is an urban
agricultural movement in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur,
Malaysia. Founded by Malaysian landscape
architect Seksan Ng, KKB is based under a 35,000
m2
 Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) transmission
line area. The garden is run by volunteers and
donates its produce to local soup kitchens and
the underprivileged (Shidqina and Tan, 2021).
KKB is the biggest community garden movement
in Malaysia and more than 2000 volunteers
participated in the initiative. Kuala Lumpur City
Hall has lauded the project as ‘a good example
of an urban farm that should be emulated by
other neighbourhoods’ (Chen, 2022).

Edible Garden City (EGC) is a social enterprise
founded by Bjorn Low in 2017. Based in
Queenstown, Singapore, EGC provides urban
garden consultancy, fresh vegetables, and
agricultural workshops for the public. EGC aims
to tackle Singapore’s food security issues by
building urban farms (Low, 2019). Since 2012,
Edible Garden City has completed more than
260 food gardens in Singapore, including some
rooftops on noticeable buildings like Marina
Bay Sands, PARKROYAL COLLECTION, and
Capitaspring (“Who We Are: Our Company,”
2022). Its movement has been recognised by the
Singaporean government that an interagency
task force on Urban Farming was formed (Low,
2019).

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land on which this
project was produced, the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung people of the
Kulin Nation, and the Traditional Owners of the lands I travelled to,
including the Pengkalan Lumpur people and Temasek people.

I pay my respects to their Elders, past, present, and emerging.</description>

KAIROS means opportune moment in Greek when people forget about the chronological
time but the memorable moment captured by experience and feelings. The project
encourages people to slow down and contemplate in this space created by
deliberate ‘obstacles’ which interact with people’s circulations.

<description>Bourke Street Oasis2021(Civic Space Design, Fabrication, Urban Furniture)

Bourke Street Oasis explores public space by reconsidering urban furniture and its materialities under the COVID-19 context. This project aims to provide thermal comfort and democratic seating for all. By improving surface materials and adding more greenery and canopies, the design provides a more thermal comfortable environment to encourage both short-term and mid-term urban resting. The sliding seat system allows for a greater agency of people as they can choose where to sit; wheelchair users can access this space as well.
Bourke Street Oasis was completed as a group project with Pearl, Zhehao, and Yingan.
