Deep Mapping: Birrarung Marr
(Indigenous History, Storytelling,
Visual Research)
This project explores the indigenous history of Naarm (Melbourne), and Birrarung Marr (Yarra River), though the palimpsest of the past and present. How were indigenous people’s traces erased and how white settlers’ manipulated the landscape?
Two maps are created to help us to understand how these changes happened through a Deep Mapping process. They focus on the topographic change (the land, soil, dirt, and mud) and indigenous activities and remains.
